China University of Mining and Technology is part of the national Project 211 and the 985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform Project, and a world-class university with first-class disciplines. It is located in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, a globally livable city, a national ecological garden city, a national environmental protection model city, and a national civilized city.

The School of Public Policy and Management can be dated back to the Administrative Management major developed from the original Department of Social Sciences established in 1985 and the Land Resource Management major evolved from China’s first mine surveying major established in 1953. In March 2020, the current School of Public Policy and Management was established by integrating the Administrative Management major under the previous School of Public Policy and Management and the Land Resource Management major previously under the School of Environment and Spatial Informatics. Meanwhile, the School of Emergency Management was established at the School of Public Policy and Management.

The School of Public Policy and Management (School of Emergency Management) is composed of three departments, one institute, and one center, which are the Department of Administrative Management, the Department of Land Resource Management, the Department of Emergency Management, the Institute of Education Economics and Management, and the MPA (Master of Public Administration) Education Center of China University of Mining and Technology, respectively. The school currently has 70 faculty members, including 62 full-time teachers, 23 professors, 18 doctoral supervisors, and 23 associate professors. The faculty have so far won nearly 20 titles ranging from the National Hundred Excellent Doctoral Dissertations Award, China Youth Science and Technology Award, the Sun Yueqi Youth Science and Technology Award, the Henry Fok Youth Teacher Award, the membership of the Teaching Guidance Committee for the Public Administration Discipline of the Ministry of Education (MOE), and the MOE New Century Excellent Talent title, the Jiangsu Province Young and Middle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions title, the Jiangsu Province Young and Middle-Aged Academic Leader and Leading Teacher titles, the Jiangsu Province High-caliber Personnel of the Six Categories of Leading Talents Program title, the Jiangsu Province Excellent Young Scientist Fund receiver.

The school currently provide doctoral education in the first-level discipline of Public Administration and six second-level disciplines including Administrative Management, Land Resource Management, Education Economics and Management, Emergency Management, Energy Resource Management, and Safety Management. The first-level discipline of Public Administrative was rated as a key discipline in Jiangsu Province in 2016 and a Class-B discipline during the fourth session of the discipline ranking initiated by the Ministry of Education, and ranked 19th in the Best Chinese Disciplines Ranking in 2020. The school offers three undergraduate programs, Land Resource Management and Administrative Management, listed as the National First-class Majors in 2021 and 2022 respectively, and Emergency Management, a new major ranked the third nationwide in the Best Chinese Disciplines Ranking.

The school has now established a number of research platforms, including the Jiangsu Provincial Innovation and Research Center for Public Safety, the Field Science Observation and Research Station of the Ministry of Education, the Think Tank for China’s Urban Public Safety Management, and the Research Center for the Transition of Resource-Based Cities and Rural Revitalization in China. In recent years, researchers of the school have presided over 100 national, provincial, and other social service programs, published over 1000 high-quality articles and books, made more than 60 political consultation reports that have been adopted or approved by the Party and government authorities at or above the provincial or ministerial level, and won over 30 awards in scientific researches and teaching at or above the provincial or ministerial level. The school has extensive talent development and research partnerships with several world-class universities in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, the Netherlands and many other countries.
